Dominical is still a dirt-road surf village at heart: a few sandy blocks between the Barú river mouth and the beach, with jungle rising fast behind. Stay in the village to walk to the wave and the bars, in Dominicalito or Escaleras just south for quiet coves and big views, or up the Barú valley toward Platanillo and Tinamastes for waterfalls and cooler mountain air. Surfers want to hear the beach break from bed. Mavi Surf Hotel is the modern surf-hotel pick, Hotel Domilocos and Hotel Roca Verde are village standbys (Roca Verde with its own beach bar scene), Tropical Sands Dominical Eco Inn keeps it simple and green, and Cool Vibes Beach Hostel is the budget social hub steps from the sand. Book ahead whenever a south swell lines up with a holiday week.
A few minutes south, the hills over Dominicalito and Escaleras hold some of the coast's best views: Villas Alturas with its ocean-view pool and wildlife sanctuary next door, boutique Tribe Boutique Hotel, adults-oriented Hotel Cuna del Angel near Puertocito, and COCO Beach Village down by the water. This is sloth-and-toucan country. Hacienda Barú Lodge sits inside a 330-hectare national wildlife refuge at the north end of town; The Elements Costa Rica Nature Lodges and Madreselva Jungle Bungalows tuck you into the forest; Río Magnolia Nature Lodge and Paradise Lodge climb into the cooler hills; and Rafiki Safari Lodge does tented safari luxury on the Savegre river north of town.
The San Isidro road (Route 243) climbs past waterfalls to the farming villages of Platanillo and Tinamastes — 15–25 minutes from the beach, noticeably cooler at night. Hotel Villas Río Mar sits on the Barú river just inland of the village, Estancia Tinamastes puts you next to the Tuesday organic market, and B&B Jardín de los Monos lives up to its monkey-garden name. Groups and families rent houses: Caballitos Del Mar Villas, Costa Rica Las Villas, Escape Villas, YouGetHere and Dominical Rentals all manage local homes — browse Housing & Rentals. High season is December–April plus North American holiday weeks; the surf is best (and rooms near the beach tightest) when south swells run March–October. WhatsApp direct usually beats platform prices and puts the money straight in local hands. Confirm payment — plenty of places are cash or SINPE Móvil — and ask about parking and river-crossing directions for hillside villas in rainy season.
Dominical sigue siendo, en el fondo, un pueblo surfista de calles de tierra: unas cuadras de arena entre la desembocadura del río Barú y la playa, con la selva subiendo justo detrás. Quédese en el pueblo para caminar a la ola y los bares, en Dominicalito o Escaleras al sur para calas tranquilas y grandes vistas, o valle arriba del Barú hacia Platanillo y Tinamastes para cataratas y aire de montaña. El surfista quiere oír el beach break desde la cama. Mavi Surf Hotel es la opción moderna de hotel de surf, Hotel Domilocos y Hotel Roca Verde son los clásicos del pueblo (Roca Verde con su propio ambiente de bar de playa), Tropical Sands Dominical Eco Inn lo mantiene sencillo y verde, y Cool Vibes Beach Hostel es el centro social económico a pasos de la arena. Reserve con tiempo cuando un swell del sur coincide con semana festiva.
A pocos minutos al sur, las colinas sobre Dominicalito y Escaleras guardan algunas de las mejores vistas de la costa: Villas Alturas con piscina con vista al mar y el santuario de vida silvestre al lado, el boutique Tribe Boutique Hotel, el Hotel Cuna del Angel cerca de Puertocito, y COCO Beach Village abajo junto al agua. La temporada alta es diciembre–abril más las semanas festivas; el surf está mejor (y los cuartos cerca de la playa más llenos) con los swells del sur de marzo a octubre. Confirme el pago — muchos lugares son efectivo o SINPE Móvil — y pregunte por parqueo e indicaciones para villas de montaña en época lluviosa.
